Have you ever watched a movie or TV show and seen a guy start straight razor shaving and think to yourself, "who does that?!" Well, you may be quite surprised by the number of people that are into straight razor shaving. Recently there has been a growing interest. I am not exactly sure why, but I have a few ideas why straight razor shaving is becoming more popular.
What was once old is new again -
As with many other things, straight razor shaving was a popular way to shave decades ago, before there were plastic razors and even before there were safety razors. With the evolution of technology and our throwaway society, everyone started using disposable razors. This meant that straight razor shaving was becoming a dying art.
With so few people shaving with a straight razor, it soon became "hip" to do so. You can watch TV shows like Mad Men and see that retro is now the "in" thing. Of course, the problem with this theory is that once enough people start straight razor shaving it will then be saturated and not so cool to be doing it anymore. While I won't call it a fad, but the interest will always ebb and flow.
Society is growing a conscience -
Disposable razors and even disposable cartridges are wasteful. It only adds more plastic in the landfills. With more people becoming more aware of their environment, they are not as willing to throw away everything. With straight razor shaving there is no plastic waste. The only thing that you will be going through will be foam, but even then, once you get the hang of it you won't be wasting too much foam. I know plenty of people going through much more foam with disposable razors because they are so irritating to the skin.
Whatever the reason, straight razor shaving is becoming more popular. Why not pick up a razor, read a few tips, and then give it a try yourself? One thing I can guarantee, you will soon have some of the smoothest shaves you have ever had in your life!
